Jealousy: The psychopath’s conscience

Risk

Civgene indicates the narcissism, ASPD and sociopath labels as a logical progression similar to id, ego and superego.  This led later to the metamind model, as a way to understand the subconscious and empathy as attributes of empathic or non-psychopath humans.  We’ve discussed emotional primitives of bliss, despair, and will to action as the building blocks of complex emotions responsible for imagination as the underpinning of empathy.  Also we’ve considered the psychopaths ability to love, and it’s limitation to a subtle compulsion to help immediate family such as other mammals display.

With the previous ideas front and center a new consideration emerges.  Animals display jealousy.  Anyone with more than one pet has seen the green eyed monster emerge, over toys, food, attention.  Animals want each others territory and favour.  They seem so knowing, so human, when they are jealous.

It could be perceived that jealousy is proof that animals display complex emotions.  Namely emotional reactions that involve more than one primitive emotion at once.  The behavior that results can be intricate, but this is not evidence of emotional complexity.  Jealousy occurs when a strong bliss, dispair, and then will to action reaction happen at the same time.  The difference is empathic humans can be jealous as an act of imagination in any time and place, imagination being that passive relational database that is the conscience.  Animals and psychopaths react to the now.

What triggers all three primitives?  It seems to begin with witnessing external bliss.  Bliss seems to create a sympathetic reaction in all animals interested in the same territory or favour as another.  One animal senses (sees, hears, smells, etc) another enjoying something and bliss is triggered within them as well.  Without the access the other animal has, the bliss activates despair.  Despair is simple helplessness.  Once despair has reached sufficient depths, will to action is called.  Will to action then drives a vast array of actions based on the available rational thought.  Rational thought that may be impaired by the strong emotion.

This progression bliss -> despair -> will is ubiquitous.  The desire to ‘steal’ what empaths may deem property or currency or interfere in a friendship is occurring at their LEAST rational state.  Emotions and the chemical signals they employ have taken over the brain.  There is no choice in the process, most importantly there is less or no rational thought.  Jealousy is the animal kingdoms more primitive risk management system.  The jealousy risk engine is the predecessor to the conscience.  Serving a vital role.  Making sure that learned behaviors during periods of calm don’t dictate actions at the moments of highest risk.  Namely one animal taking another’s territory or favour.  It’s a simple trick to snap an animal out of a more common pattern and stand up for it’s self.

A psychopath who has progressed to a sociopath rationally recognizes this risk.  He or she will work to avoid situations that provoke jealousy.  Partly by limiting social access themselves to those who will accept their assignments without challenge, and partly by becoming materially successful beyond practical needs.  They become wildly rich to avoid the green eyed monster.
It’s a good strategy when social interactions are infrequent or small, but inferior to our risk engine, the conscience.  Jealousy breaks down as complexity increases.  Civilization and it’s enabler the conscience creates the invention and surplus needed to concentrate great wealth and power in psychopath hands, but the psychopaths must face other psychopaths with similar wealth.  Instances of jealousy can not be eliminated inside a human civilization.

The flaws in managing risk through jealousy are two fold.

  • Centralized power pushes out investment.  While invention creates surplus, power saps it.  Invention will always occur from empath humans but as a power structure becomes more pervasive, more invention simply occurs outside it.  Currency systems form as a way to capitalize on the external investment, and new power is formed outside the old scope.  This can be at any scope from a family farm to competing superpowers.  Currency (including money) goes to where it is treated best.
  • Any environment from a town to a planet has natural boundaries.  Since there will always be opportunities to create jealousy a sociopath will assert their dominance until they are stopped by force or exhaust all resources.  While they can limit the frequency of jealous experiences, it is a fantasy from a primitive time that they can prevent them.

Notice that both of these risks are long term.  Hence the idea the civilization gene, the mutation of the metamind, is a superior engine of long term risk management.

Sociopath stage psychopaths can reliably be identified by their desire for wealth and power.  We must avoid the exhaustion of global resources, not by further centralizing their power, but by focusing our power of invention at a local scope.  A psychopath will see external currencies as risk as per their tool jealousy, but they have a major disability when weighing risk to property, currency and the autonomy they enable.  Currency and property of any type is derived from the conscience itself.  Shun false ‘leaders’ that want power over local currencies.  Not just currencies we trade for goods and services, but anything that defines our skills, experience and identity.  Not out of jealousy of their wealth, but as rejection of their inability to even discern, much less serve, humanities interests.

2013 study: Entertaining conspiracy theory indicates emotional blance

sleepy

A month ago I wrote that conspiracy theories, assuming you treat them as theories until proven otherwise, are an excellent exercise for the health of your conscience.  It turns out that those who believe (misused word IMO) in conspiracy theories, are more emotionally balanced in general, and less prone to rage and outburst.  A typical psychopathic symptom.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3703523/

This matches my ideas about the prevalence of psychopathic society and the personal effects of subscribing to it.  Particularly individuals becoming  proto-psychopaths and nullifying the use and influence of the conscience as directed by external reprogramming of emotional metadata.

The article that originally sources this study, also cites a new book.  The quote is as such.  “The CIA’s campaign to popularize the term ‘conspiracy theory’ and make conspiracy belief a target of ridicule and hostility must be credited, unfortunately, with being one of the most successful propaganda initiatives of all time”

I would love to know if this is just a plausible theory or substantiated.  We have mentioned previous proven CIA psyops here.  It would be interesting to see if the CIA would continue this practice, discouraging conspiracy theory that is, if it was common knowlage that the result was likely proto-psychopathy and diminished role of the conscience.  The only two societies furnished by history as successful with large numbers of psychopaths in the population are the time share aka: the cooperative model of conscionable behavior or outright slavery.  Not to say proto-psychopaths are identical to genetic psychopaths, but the behavior is close enough that the genetically supported models are a plausible expectation of widespread proto-psychopathy.  In addition it seems unlikely that large percentages of proto-psychopaths would make it any easier to catch sociopath stage psychopaths.

Another book for the stack.  🙂

How to personally deal with psychopaths.

200021466-003

I’ve written about this topic here several times, but it occurs to me I haven’t properly categorized it.   All the appropriate blog posts are under Defense Against Psychopaths.

http://civgene.matthewnewhall.com/archives/category/defense-against-psychopaths

The problem is that category has become quite broad.  So I’ve created a new category Defense Against a Psychopath.  This is where to go if you’re trying to solve an immediate personal problem.

http://civgene.matthewnewhall.com/archives/category/defense-against-a-psychopath

Here is a quick guide to the new category, so far.

Shunning is key.  The problem is no solution will work unless you can identify them BEFORE they take advantage of you.  They will succeed unless you know your self

So…

  • Know yourself.
  • Identify psychopaths
  • Shun psychopaths

If you can’t shun them keep all interaction public.  This is a decent disincentive to anti-social behavior.  This is so you never let give them 1. singular authority over data or 2. a supervisor role over another human (including yourself.)

So now it’s

  • know yourself
  • Identify psychopaths
  • shun psychopaths
  • If you can’t shun because you have to enforce the two rules, keep all interaction public.

If you want personal help, read the following in order.

Sponsored sociopathy

Persistent shunning is effective when a psychopath tries to treat you as a slave.  Is this cruel?  Not at all, you are actually helping them.  You are sharing the virtues of your conscience.  By isolating them from risky social situations, you are helping them to avoid the long term social risks they cannot weigh subconsciously.  More so than than the empaths who are oblivious to their exact disorder, you are acting as their guardian.

Without compound emotions, psychopaths can’t feel fear like we do, only despair.  Human fear is despair imagined in the future.  Fear requires imagination.  Imagination is not just visualization, but subconscious immersion with emotional context.  You could argue that animals display fear, but they are strictly reacting to an occurrence now.  I argue fear indicates a future time component.  Animals are reacting to something they associate with attributes of a past pain, or the basic attributes of danger (a loud noise for example.)  Remove the stimulus and the despair will retract at a predictable pace.  Not necessarily true for a human.  An empathic human will also react to perceived future risk.  Depending on the circumstances, possibly as long as the rest of their life.

Since first putting together the civilization gene theory, I’ve been haunted by the question.  Will the shunning be relentless?  Perhaps not.  Psychopaths have a choice.  Any particular psychopath could decide operate in the open with the logical tools they do have.  If a psychopath were to openly acknowledge civilization as their master, they would then have a framework for treating other humans as peers. To be clear, a psychopath can offer a slave like submission on an individual or small basis, but this is a risky proposition for the propositioned empath(s).  The societies around them and civilization itself are not aware of their psychopath nor in some cases that such a person can even exist.  So when such an agreement is challenged, the psychopath can simply lie and say no agreement existed.  Further they can lie and say they never displayed the negative behavior that brought the agreement to bear.  That is the likely choice to be made by someone driven entirely by selfish logic.  With near certainty if they perceive a golden opportunity.

A zero trust network is needed.  Science is possibly the first such information classification system.  First information is proposed.  Then tests are formulated by someone with both the means and the interest.  Finally the results are verified by anyone with the means to do so.  The cheaper information verification is, the better the system works.

Traditional science has huge barriers to entry for some scientific verification.  Enormous grants are needed to build extravagant machinery and hire vast staffs to perform multi-year experiments that are then locked behind large paywalls guarded by minimally staffed scientific journals.   But more recently open source software has catapulted computer science to the fore with a barrier of entry to one computer, internet connection and food, clothing and electricity for a staff of one.   Just now (in history) Bitcoin and it’s ilk have further scaled the zero trust (scientific) method down to a mere single statement with instant verification on a global scale.

Psychopaths now have simple mechanisms to commit themselves to the greater good.  They simply need a cell phone with a small piece of free software and a golden opportunity that drives them to use it.  They simply need to state under the rigors of vetted mathematics, that they are indeed a sociopath and are prepared to submit to civilization itself.

What does it mean to be part of this commitment to humanity?  Both a commitment to those empaths who have not grown beyond their default state of trust, and to psychopaths who recognize they are being offered assistance navigating or even conquering the oddities of a world built on irrational compassion.  It would looks like this.

Psychopath’s duty

  • Dedication to logic.
  • Admit to sociopathy.
  • Admit civilization and society as your master.
  • Admit a lack of conscience creates social problems.
  • Openly establish trusted sources of criticism (empath sponsors.)
  • Accept criticism from your sponsors.
  • Demonstrate implementation or dismiss feasibility of criticism.
  • Psychopaths must admit that empathic sponsors are capible of Kohlberg’s post conventional thinking.

Empath’s duty

  • Vigilence.  Sponsorship means always being prepared to revert to shunning.
  • Psychopaths have no singular authority over data.
  • Psychopaths have no direct reports.
  • A commitment to a reasoned approach to inclusion baring violation of the above.
  • Sponsors must understand that Kohlberg’s conventional stage is the final moral destination for psychopaths.

The essence of this system is for empaths to lend, and verify the reception of, the post conventional properties to the conscience to sponsored sociopaths.  In return the psychopath can enjoy more (though obviously not limitless) social freedom.  The ability to move freely around people who will shun rather than punish or attack them for missing some ‘common sense’ about long term risk.  Who instead of condemning them for not displaying a behavior they simply can’t display, will lend their abilities to navigate day to day risks.  Instead of doubling down on social pressure (more importantly the consequences of not complying) allowing the sociopaths isolated downtime to logically asses their environment and subsequently control their mood swings.

While this will likely fail for any psychopaths in narcisistic or ASPD stage (described in ‘psychopath labels’) there is real promise for assisting an intelligent logical sociopath into a sponsored conventional stage.  This would be both beneficial to psychopath and to society as a whole as the long term risky behaviors are reduced.

James Fallon

Fallon

Got to meet with James Fallon and a few other interested doctors for an hour today and discuss what else, but psychopathy.  He was open to my ideas.  He seems charming enough and focused on science.  I complemented him on his unusual dedication to logic.

I discussed my dismissal of the warrior gene as a possible source of psychopathy, and the national geographic piece that inspired it.  He concurred that the most effective warriors would be calm and controlled.

He was able to casually corroborate my psychopath labels paper (the id -> ego -> superego) and the conscience as a long term risk manager.  He seemed particularly interested in both emotional metadata and the metamind model.

He provided some insight into the advantages that psychopaths have.  Particularly the minimal amount of sleep they require.  A major advantage in labor intensive fields.  The night-time mental wanderings (maintenance and problem solving?) of an empaths subconscious seems to double their downtime.

I’m hoping more will come this.  Time will tell.  Dr. Fallon your contributions are welcome here.  Thanks for your time.

Brainspotting (fake empathy)

brainspotting

Psychopaths in all stages (narcissist, ASPD, sociopath) sometimes need to pretend they have compound emotions that they don’t really feel.  Being ideological makes us vulnerable to their scripts.  The more ideological you are the more they can manipulate you with your own cognitive dissonance.  The inverse is also true.  If your logical mind uses rationalization to know your subconscious self, wasting mind power on defending your ideology becomes unnecessary, freeing valuable mind power to detect anomalies in your own conscience. These anomalies are often a sign someone is trying to manipulate you.

Here are a few examples of manufactured empathy designed by psychopaths to manipulate you.

Celebrity gossip:  Psychopaths love to chat about the stars.  Particularly if a celebrity has a great misfortune that many people are in consensus about.  The card trick is simple.  Turn on the teevee and consume every perspective on the awful fate befalling some star.  Then at a convenient time regurgitate word for word the script that was read to them.

The clue:  Look for a similar but distinct situation with a neighboor or friend (who is not on social media) and ask them about that.  They’ll hem and haw.

Pet perversion:  Psychopaths know that people project all kinds of irrational love and trust on their pets.  They will profess astonishment at an abused cat on the TeeVee but then beat, ignore, or experiment with their own dog behind closed doors.  ‘Isn’t it awful’ they’ll say.

The clue:  The animal is just a prop to them.  They’ll talk it up but it will be malnourished, untrained, or allowed to run loose.  They just as soon throw it in front of your car to trade an animal slave for a human one.

The one true ism:  Sociopaths drool over the prospects for enslaving whole populations with a clever qip.  Be it nationalism, racism, religious fundementalism, feminism, etc.  You name it.  If it pushes one group over another, the world has a whole lot less peers and a whole lot more masters and slaves, and making their their need for rank and file more rationial with each recruit.  Healthy idiology is both personal and contextual.  Empathic humans expound joy and revel in enlightenment and realization.

The clue: Do the ‘betters’ in your favorite idea act more like children sharing a new skill they’ve discovered, or zookeepers?  Are they teaching you what they’ve learned about fishing or simply throwing you some fish to keep you well fed, for now?   Don’t be passive.  Ask questions until you stump them.  They will slip and show themselves.  Trust your gut.  Then you will know if it’s just a handout (a Pavlovian training mechanism) or a hand up (the compassion of a peer).

The children:  ‘but what about the children’  It’s a cliché.  It almost goes without saying.  But there is a subtle point which may assist you.  Psychopaths do actually care for their children.  Almost all animals do.  It’s not the same as the love we show but it’s just as real to them.

The clue:  Psychopaths turn to their own experience as children when parenting.  A combination of harsh punishment and public denial would have protected them during their ASPD episodes, so they impart the same on their children psychopath or not.  They may let their children run amok and only punish them when they are caught.  The real lesson is not emotional programming of the conscience (pointless to them) but instead the simple logical message ‘don’t get caught.’  This results in some radical hypocrisy, especially for those in public life.

Anything you care deeply about: If you wear your heart on your sleeve they will use the knowlage to chain you up and clean you out.

The clue:  If someone depicts them self as an emotional match that is simply too good to be true, it probably is.  Know yourself emotionally (internal or external psychotherapy) and the distortion of the manipulation attempt should send your conscience reeling.

This is not even close to comprehensive, but gives you some examples of how fake empathy can be used to open your mind just enough that your metamind falls out.  Explore your mind to discover your own ideas.  The isms that truly suit your mind will always have an element of faith.  It greatly behoves you to operate on a hunch.  That’s what your conscience is for!  That is how you become your own leader.  You must be your own leader to truly treat your peers as equals.

Modesty in clothing, shamelessly human

Saw an interesting video discussing the use and role of clothing.  While I don’t disagree with any of the facts discussed, the civilization gene (still a theory pending genetic study) hints at a few missing points.  People displaying ’embarrassment’ are seen as being likeable, forgivable, and trustworthy.  And of course now being a loyal civgene reader, you’re also thinking, it also hints at not being a psychopath.

The most interesting point was the discussion of a study of modesty using actors pretending to be embarrassed.  He’s an article discussing that study.

http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/2011/09/28/easily-embarrassed/

Perhaps becoming shy instead of enraged or indignant is a clue someone actually has a conscience.  So not only is making occasional mistakes acceptable, but perhaps the key to successful socialization.  I’m both excellent at making mistakes and sheepishly owning up to them.  Which may be the reason anyone talks to me at all.  ;P.

A dead simple explanation is that a self correcting reaction indicates a lack of subscription to the master/slave model.  Seeking people who appear to feel embarasment is a natural defense against psychopaths.  The disturbing part is, as the study points out, the actors emotions are completely manufactured.  Hence the problem with using only social clues to locate psychopaths.  It can be a well rehearsed lie.  Any psychopath in any stage (wants, abilities, or limits), can be easily turn out to be a clever actor.

I’ve moved past the warrior gene

bulb

I have, I really have.  A couple of months ago I posted a great National Geographic video where they clearly lay out that there is no freaking way (to be technical) that the ‘warrior gene’ is a vital component of psychopathy.

http://civgene.matthewnewhall.com/archives/366

In case you didn’t notice you can click on the keywords on the right.  You can look at all my thoughts on warrior gene, or any other category in one quick click.

http://civgene.matthewnewhall.com/archives/category/warrior-gene

It certainly could be argued that the lack of the civilization gene and the presence of the ‘warrior gene’ (which should be named the fly off the handle gene or the loose your temper gene) is a lethal combination.  Together a psychopath would not only have the predisposition to get an early start on the ego or ASPD developmental stage, but barring both luck (socioeconomic privilege) and high intelligence never leave it’s orbit for sociopathy.  A psychopath with the ‘warrior gene’ would be apt to solve EVERYTHING with both his or her body and invent confrontation where little conflict had previously existed.  Truly a nightmare criminal in the making.

Please understand that psychopaths are not inherently violent.  While their aloof dreamlike view of other humans means the ego stage can be violent, that with understanding and caution, they can live fairly normal lives.  The key is both awareness and understanding of challenges that the lack of a metamind presents them with.  Treating them like empaths is asking for confrontation, but understanding and accommodating their binary view of other humans, allows for distant but respectful relationships.

Compassion and trust, hopefully not to a fault, is the foundation of civilization itself.  Non psychopathic humans are filled with an almost endless fountain of hope and trust, but also with a keen sense of unrealized danger.  This strange combination, not just intelligence is what binds us together.  When we leave psychopathy and it’s simple minded master/slave social approach behind, civilization will finally dominate mankind.  Civilization is the logic of compassion.
